モーリス・ロス： 2人の孤独なイズミット
ロスという選手について
2000年代初頭、まだレンジャーズが強かった頃、モーリス・ロスという選手がいた。ロスは細身のDFで、CBと右サイドバックをやっていた。もうはっきりとは覚えていないが、身軽で、知的で、細身だがタックルも強く、それなりにスピードがある、良い選手だった。ボール扱いも悪くなかったと思う（その頃はまだ誰もDFのボール扱いを真面目に考えていなかったのだ）。
レンジャーズにはスター選手が揃っていた。少なくともスコットランドの基準では。
GKにドイツ人のシュテファン・クロス。DFラインにはフェルナンド・リクセン、ロレンツォ・アモルーゾ、アルトゥル・ヌマン。MFにはバリー・ファーガソン、ロナルド・デ・ブール、ヨルク・アルベルツ、ニール・マッキャン、あと若き日のアルテタ。FWにはミハエル・モルツ、ショタ・アルヴェラーゼ、カニージャにロヴェンクランツ。強豪国の代表クラスが勢揃いである。その中で、ロスは20台そこそこにして、レンジャーズの半レギュラーに収まっていた。2002年には代表にも選ばれた。チャンピオンズリーグにも出た。ロスには、それなりに輝かしい未来が待っているように見えた。
"I thought when I was 21 and at Rangers winning trophies that it was going to be like that forever," he admits. "I don't have a Champions League jersey in the house. I gave them all away to family and friends at the time because I would just think to myself, 'Ach, there's always the ones from next season to keep'. I didn't appreciate enough what I had."

そこから、ロスのサッカー人生は暗転した。シェフィールド・ウェンズデイ、ウォルヴァーハンプトン、ミルウォールとイングランドの下部を転々として、それからノルウェーに行き、中国に行き、遥かトルコはコジャエリにも行った。
2011年にスコットランドに戻ったときには、ロスはレンジャーズで「期待の若手」と言われていた頃の自分に、恐ろしくシニカルになっていた。曰く、最初からそんなレベルの選手ではなかった。周りのスター選手が、下駄を履かせてくれていただけだったのだ。
"I was treading water there. I just couldn't fathom how I was knocking my pan in just to be on a level playing field with the quality of the team-mates around me. The other guys in that Rangers side then could just stroll about and still be better than me. I was lucky to get the number of games I did for Rangers. I was probably only capped because I was at Rangers. I never watch any of my old games back on tape, it would just frustrate and annoy me."

Despite winning 12 caps for Scotland he felt playing alongside the likes of Barry Ferguson, Arthur Numan, Gio van Bronckhorst and Ronald de Boer every week gave people a false impression of his talents.
Ross added: “At Rangers, Numan would get the ball. It would be popped back to Amoruso. I am already going knowing Barry Ferguson will half turn and play it first time.
“At Millwall it went into Marvin Elliott and he lost it because he is not as good as Barry Ferguson, and suddenly I was 30-yards out of position.
“People think because I was a Rangers player that shouldn’t happen. I wasn’t the type of player who could beat five men. I needed support and I didn’t have it anymore.
“I was a link in the chain at Rangers. I would show up well as the links around me were so strong.
“When I went down south I didn’t have the ability to show I was brilliant.”

擁護をすると、彼は自分を卑下しすぎている。後にレンジャーズやセルティックで活躍したスコットランド人DF、例えばウィテカーとか、ブロードフットとか、ウェブスターとか、コルドウェル兄弟とか、その辺りと比べて格段に見劣りするなんて選手ではなかった。同い年のスコットランド人で、セルティックにいたスティーヴン・クレイニー（後にブラックプールで活躍し、イングランドのプレミアリーグでもレギュラーを張った）との比較には「あいつは元から良かったから。ただチャンスが中々来なかっただけで」と言うが、クレイニーとロスがレギュラーに収まるスコットランド代表は、決してあり得ない未来ではなかったと思う。
Could there yet be a way back? Stephen Crainey, then of Celtic, was an international team-mate of Ross during the same period and has returned to the Scotland fold with Blackpool. Ross is making no such predictions for himself, though. He refuses to believe he has it in him. He claims Crainey was always good enough, he just missed the exposure until Blackpool's surprise promotion to the Premier League. The closest he has got himself to repeating anything like the good old days came in China.

しかし、一度味わった栄光は、それがどんなサイズでも忘れがたいものだ。まず、ちょっとした不運が重なって、キャリアアップの道が撚れ始めた。その頃は2部に落ちていたとは言え、人気があったウェストハムへの移籍が決まっていたが、レンジャーズの都合とパーデューの心変わりで無くなった。
The story of how Ross ended up in Norway is one of what he calls catastrophic events. During his last year at Rangers he was very close to signing for Alan Pardew’s West Ham. He was in in London with a contract agreed when Rangers called him back up to Glasgow because of an injury to another player. By the time Rangers were willing to let him go, Pardew had ripped up the offer.

昇格するウォルヴァーハンプトンに移籍できそうだったが、セルティックのジャッキー・マクナマラと天秤にかけられて、取りやめになった。マクナマラは移籍してすぐに怪我をしたので、ロスは完全移籍するはずだったクラブにレンタルで派遣され、マクナマラが復帰すると切られた。
Then when his contract with Rangers was up, Wolverhampton were willing to offer him a three-year deal if their first choice, Jackie McNamara, would not leave Celtic when his contact came to an end at the same time. As everyone expected McNamara to get a new offer at Celtic, Ross looked set to sign for the championship club, who would gain promotion to the Premier League the following season.
Instead, McNamara ended up leaving Celtic in controversial circumstances and Ross was left without a club. When McNamara then incurred a serious injury shortly afterwards, Ross was loaned out to Wolves after not settling at his new club Sheffield Wednesday, eventually signing a six-month permanent contract with the club. With McNamara back to fitness, Ross was released again, this time ending up at Millwall and what he calls the worst experience of his career.

レベルについて侮られがちなスコットランドリーグだが、レンジャーズとセルティックは毎試合3万人から4万人、下手をすると5万人近くの観客が入り、営業収入は世界のトップ20に入るようなビッグクラブだった。ミルウォールはそうではなかった。
‘It was a total culture shock in every sense. The football was completely different, kick and run. Players were eating baked potatoes and beans. The whole set-up was less professional than what I had been used to and it was a really bad time’.

ロスは彼曰く“大したことない監督の下で、大したことない選手とプレーする”ことに適応できず、クラブにも馴染めず、試合に出たり、出なかったりしながら20台の中頃を過ごした。
"I kick myself every day," claims the Motherwell defender. "There's not a day that goes by where I don't think 'what if, what if'. If I'd just done things differently."

“I had everything quick. I had the best of everything at Rangers. I worked with the best coaches and the best players.
“Before you know it you are at Millwall with not so good coaches and not so good players. But my head was still telling me I was dealing with Jan Wouters and Ronald de Boer.
“I wasn’t very good at adjusting and that becomes a problem. I had been used to a certain standard, but people were not interested.
“It didn’t help that I was so outspoken. There was also bitterness and resentment there, and that all came from my own mind set.

その後、2008年にノルウェーに渡って、ウーヴェ・レスラー（マンチェスター・シティの名FWだ）が指揮するヴィーキングで、ちょっとキャリアを取り戻した。30試合近く試合に出たし、リーグで3位に入った。その頃のヴィーキングにはトーマス・ミーレ（元エヴァートン、サンダランドのGK）や、ラグンヴァル・ソマ（元ウェストハムのDF）といった英国のリーグ経験者がいたから、馴染みやすかったかもしれない。
Rosler and Viking offered him a way out.
‘I had a good feeling as soon as I arrived there. There was more money in the Norwegian league back then, Viking had just moved into a new stadium and had some very good players. Fit, hungry boys that tried to play proper football. It was a nice, fresh break from what had gone on at Millwall’

我らが愛しのイズミット
そして2009年の2月、ロスはイズミットにいた。イズミットはイスタンブールからアジア側に渡って1時間か2時間ほどのところにある人口約30万人ほどの港湾都市で、海軍の基地がある。その他には？まあ、色々あるわな。トルコ人に言わせればだが。10年前の大地震で崩壊したまま放っておかれた家がそこかしこにあったが、きれいな街だった。
ロスはそのシーズンにトップリーグに昇格したコジャエリスポルに移籍したのだ。コジャエリスポルは昔UEFAカップにも出たことがあるクラブだが、その頃は全然強くなく、残留を目指して戦っていた。タナル・ギュレリという名ストライカーがいて、彼が1人頑張っているようなチームだった。
で、かつてモーリス・ロスに薄っすらと愛着を持っていたサッカー少年だった私も、まさに2009年の2月、イズミットにいた。私はその頃、イズミットで英会話教室のアシスタントをしたり、幼稚園で子供の面倒を見たり、中学生のガキにタバコをくれてやったり、クレー射撃の選手とつるんだり、まあプラプラしていた。正確にはどうだか知らないが、私が知る限り、その頃イズミットにいる日本人は私を含めて3人だけだった。ちょうど総選挙の時期で、県知事のイブラヒム・カラオスマノールが選挙対策の一環で我々と握手したのが新聞に載ったくらいだったから、珍しい生き物だったことには間違い無いと思う。
私はイズミットでちょっとしたトラブルを抱えていた。というか、トラブルがないことがトラブルだった。私はどこかの学校か職場で数ヶ月腰を据えてインターンをする予定だったのだが、私をイズミットに連れてきてくれた団体は適当な受け入れ先を見つけるのに苦労していて、だからこそ市立の幼稚園のようなところでも行かざるを得なかったのだ。幼稚園児というのは、万国共通で半分動物みたいなもんだから、英語が喋れようが喋れまいが、どっちでも良かった。会社や大学で日々トラブルに直面し、それを乗り越えていく自分を夢想していた私は、自分で受け入れ先を見つけようとするわけでもなく、団体を手伝うわけでもなく、ただ自分の不幸を嘆きながら、プラプラとしていた。こんなことをしていて良いんだろうか、と思っていた。
冬のイズミットは寒かった。私は同じようにイズミットにおける珍獣であり、同じ寒さに震えており、そして同じような場違い感を感じているかもしれないロスに、親近感を覚えていた。まあスコットランド人だから、寒くなかったかも知れないが。
結局コジャエリスポルは降格し、財政難に陥り、2017年の今では4部にいる。ロスには給与が支払われず、今でも未払いのままらしい。
ロスは2013年に引退し、次の人生を選んだ。1年間、コスタ・コーヒーに朝から居座って、工学の勉強をし、次に監督になった。
He spent the next 12 months studying engineering while sitting in Costa Coffee then headed to Norway and a new life.
Ross said: “I told myself I would get over football.
“So I got up 7am every morning and went to the coffee shop and studied engineering.
“I stayed there for seven hours a day. I sat in Costa in Broughty Ferry five days a week. It really helped me and gave me focus again.
“I now work 12 hours every day, but it is not a stress. I finish work as an account manager and head to training. We train five days a week.
“I love it. This is like an investment for me. I have got the bug. I was thinking when was the last time I submerged myself in something?
“I have a good feeling about myself again and I have got that passion back.”

ロスは今、フェロー諸島の首都トースハウンから船で2時間かかる島で、監督をしている。店が数軒と、ピザ・レストランとパブが1つずつある。コーチ養成課程で会ったオランダ人のマーク・デ・ヴリース（元ハーツ、レスターのFW）が助監督になり、2人でルームシェアをしている。黒かった髪は灰色になった。成績は対して良くないが、情熱は消えていないようだ。
“We get about 600 at games, but that’s more than ten per cent of the island’s population.
“I view this as a major part of my development as a coach. I believe coaching is in my DNA.
“The road I’m on may be a bit windier than the one others take, but that doesn’t bother me.
